May it please Your Royal Highness, It is a great honour and pleasure for all of us present here to again welcome Your Royal Highness to the S.E.A. Write Award Presentation Ceremony. On behalf of the Organising Committee, the two panels of judges, the awardees and all the sponsors, as well as our distinguished guest speaker and guests gathered here, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Your Royal Highness for having so graciously consented to preside over this auspicious occasion, which marks the 41st anniversary of the Southeast Asian Writers Award. And what is even more special is we have the honour of welcoming recipients from the past 3 years at one gathering. One of the region’s most prestigious literary events, The S.E.A. Write Award was established in 1979 to recognise and honour the works of contemporary poets and writers from the ASEAN countries, presenting an award to a winner from each country. The inaugural Awards Ceremony was graciously presided over by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Winners from five ASEAN countries participated in the Ceremony. The S.E.A. Write Award nowadays is fully represented by all ten ASEAN countries. Your Royal Highness’ continuous support of The S.E.A. Write Award for more than four decades has inspired all of us involved in the process and has been instrumental in making this a success story over the years as Southeast Asia’s one truly regional literary award. With Your Royal Highness’ permission, due to the presence of three times the usual number of honoured awardees present at tonight’s ceremony, the distinguished awardees’ illustrious background and achievements will not be read out as normal procedure in previous years. The information together with excerpts from their winning works with translations can be found in the 2016 - 2018 S.E.A. Write Awards Booklet. I would also like to take this opportunity to say how privileged and delighted we all are that tonight we have the opportunity to hear the keynote address from a remarkable lady, Claire Keefe-Fox, whose love of history and travel have won much recognition in the literary world. My report humbly submitted to Your Royal Highness would not be complete without mentioning the generous support of our sponsors. They have our heartfelt gratitude, as do the selecting and judging committees in Thailand and in the other participating countries. 571
Now, with Your Royal Highness’ gracious permission, I would like to ask Mr. Greg Liddell, General Manager of the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, to come to the podium respectfully to invite Your Royal Highness to present the S.E.A. Write Award plaques to the sponsors, followed by the winners from the years 2016, 2017 and 2018; and Guest Speaker Ms. Claire Keefe-Fox. Mr. Greg Liddell will then invite the 9 awardee representatives from each country who will deliver a speech on behalf of awardees of all three years, followed by the keynote address by our distinguished Guest Speaker Ms. Claire Keefe-Fox. And again with Your Royal Highness’ gracious permission, after the keynote speech by Ms. Claire Keefe-Fox, I would like to invite Her Royal Highness to honour this gathering with a Royal Address - in closing. May it please Your Royal Highness, I would also like to take this opportunity to say how privileged and delighted we all are that tonight we have the opportunity to hear the keynote address from a remarkable lady, Claire Keefe-Fox, whose love of history and travel have won much recognition in the literary world. Ms. Keefe-Fox was born in Italy of French and American parents. Growing up between Europe and the USA, she has always felt a special affinity for Asia. She has written three novels in French, Le Ministre des Moussons, L’Atelier d’Eternit. and Le Roi des Rizi.res, but her latest novel Siamese Tears is in English. Three of her books have been translated into Thai. After four years as director of the Alliance Fran.aise for Thailand, she returned to university in Paris to complete her degree in Thai language and studies. Siamese Tears, a tale of the intrigues and dangers surrounding the Paknam incident of 1893 and the machinations of the French and the British seen through the eyes of a young half-French half-English woman of independent spirit. She also conducts workshops on creative writing focusing on how to create fictional stories based on historical events: Historical novels - Become a Time Traveller. 572
